For the 2017-2018 year, we are hiring a postdoctoral fellow together with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Dalhousie. The PDF will be part-time with Math Circles, and part-time work on research. For more information, see the advertisement below.

Nova Scotia Math Circles and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Nova Scotia Math Circles and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Dalhousie University are advertising a post-doctoral fellowship with duties in outreach, outreach coordination, and communication. The post-doctoral fellow will spend 50% of their duties on research, and 50% on outreach and outreach coordination, see job description below. The academic supervisor of the PDF must be a member of the department of Mathematics and Statistics at Dalhousie University. Interested candidates should contact their proposed supervisor before the application.

The outreach coordinator duties consist of the following:

  • Communicate with teachers and schoolboards
  • Organize outreach trips to schools in the province
  • Coordinate regular staff and casuals for school visits and outreach events
  • Maintain the Math Circles finances
  • Work with external relations and sponsors
  • Ensure continued funding for Math Circles as required

The outreach coordinator should have received their PhD after July 2013 and before August 2017. They should have strong research skills, an interest in math outreach, good social and organizational skills, and experience in outreach as well as outreach and/or event coordination. Advantageous but not necessary are the following: experience with html and design programs, a driver's license, and experience in fundraising with corporations.

Terms of employment will conform to post-doctoral fellowship positions at Dalhousie University. The position is for one year, starting August 2017. The position is renewable for a second year subject to budgetary approval.

  • A teaching dossier with an emphasis on outreach
  • A brief research statement
  • A minimum of three reference letters: two on research and at least one, but preferably two, on outreach and administrative experience.
